The Navi Mumbai International Airport, which many have been waiting for, is now expected to commence operations in September 2025, according to Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant. The airport was supposed to open by the end of August, but minor delays have pushed it to September.

“About 95% of the construction is done. The first phase will start within the next two months, operating with limited capacity,” Samant informed the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during a discussion on state investments. The airport’s second phase is likely to open a few months after the first phase begins.

Maharashtra Leads in MoU Implementation

Samant also shared that Maharashtra has made good progress on investment agreements, achieving the highest implementation rate in India, with 87% of signed MoUs being executed.

In the past three years, Maharashtra has signed MoUs worth:

  • ₹1.80 trillion (₹1.80 lakh crore)
  • ₹7 trillion (₹7 lakh crore)
  • ₹15.72 trillion (₹15.72 lakh crore)
  • Out of 46 companies that signed MoUs:

15 companies have received land

  • 7 more will get land soon
  • 20 are waiting for plots based on their requests
  • 4 industrial units are ready to begin operations

Industrial Growth in Gadchiroli

Samant highlighted that the state is working on balanced industrial growth, mentioning that Gadchiroli is becoming a steel production hub with investments of ₹1 trillion (₹1 lakh crore).

He credited the CM Employment Guarantee Scheme for helping set up over 62,000 industrial units, which he said is six times higher than during the previous government.

FDI and Vishwakarma Scheme Performance

Maharashtra, under CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, remains a leader in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). The state is also among the top three in the country for implementing the Centre’s Vishwakarma Scheme for artisans and skilled workers.

BMC’s Financial Situation

On concerns about the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) financial liabilities, Samant stated that BMC’s liabilities have increased to ₹2.32 trillion (₹2.32 lakh crore), a 22% rise over the past year. However, he denied any financial mismanagement and said the increase is due to ongoing infrastructure projects.
