Navi Mumbai’s infra marvel! India’s longest sea bridge project Mumbai Trans Harbour Link nears Jan 2024 deadline
Source: Financial Express
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Maharashtra unit had initially slated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), India’s longest sea bridge, for a December 25 public opening. However, with around 97% completion, recent updates suggest a potential delay in inauguration until January 2024.
Initially set for December 25, the bridge’s inauguration aimed to alleviate peak-hour travel by 30-45 minutes. Yet, pending tasks, including electrification, pole installation, toll booths, and system integration, are yet to be finalized by the implementing agency.
Toll and traffic control related work underway
One of the main impediments to the MTHL’s opening involves pending works related to traffic control mechanisms and automatic toll collection, deemed essential before its operational commencement, according to media reports.
Additionally, discussions around toll rates have surfaced, with an initial proposal suggesting an exorbitant toll of Rs 500, which was later considered unfeasible by the Chief Minister’s Office. Plans are underway to propose a substantial subsidy to reduce the toll burden, possibly by 40-50%, especially in the initial phase to prevent commuter backlash.
Connecting South Mumbai with Navi Mumbai township
The MTHL, spanning 23 kilometers and comprising a six-lane 21.8 km road bridge between Sewri in Mumbai and Chirle in Navi Mumbai, remains a highly anticipated project. Once operational, it is set to significantly connect South Mumbai with the bustling Navi Mumbai township.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing the project’s execution. Despite the recent delays and hurdles, authorities remain committed to ensuring the completion and subsequent launch of the MTHL, a transformative infrastructure development for Mumbai and its adjacent regions.
